Design Director
Design Directors are found in both agencies and within organisations who have an internal design function.
Within an internal studio function, the Design Director is responsible for leading a team of graphic designers and overseeing the creative direction of all design projects within the business.
Key responsibilities include:
- Working closely with the brand teams in marketing to continually set the direction of how the brand is positioned
- Continuing to evolve, own and implement the visual guidelines across all marketing channels in alignment with strategic brand requirements
- Writing and delivering creative briefs for internal teams and external agencies
- Directing all phases of visual design work from concept through production
- Acting as an ambassador for design across the business, informing and engaging all divisions
- Recruiting and leading the design team
- Taking responsibility for ensuring all resources allocated to projects have the right capabilities to within agreed timescales
The Design Director will have come through the ranks in graphic design roles and is likely to have a mix of in-house studio and design agency experience. They will need to be hands-on with design as required, but will mainly oversee the creation and delivery of all design activity. As such, it’s essential they have an outstanding portfolio showcasing their design talent.
The Design Director will report to senior management team on progress, working with them to agree requirements, brand direction and to look at potential opportunities to differentiate in their industry.
Salary wise outside of London the role generally pays between £50,000 to £70,000 depending on regional variance and level of experience.
